Reichsburg Castle
This is a must. Everywhere you go in Cochem you will see the castle sitting on a mountain above you. It is a beautiful castle so go on a tour. We got to the castle around 1:00 PM and had to wait about 15 minutes for an English language tour. If you can’t make one of the English tours you can go on a German language tour and they will give you a sheet of paper with everything in English so you can follow along.
The castle was destroyed by the French in the late 1600’s and was purchased and restored by a Berlin businessman in the late 1800’s. The town of Cochem has owned the castle since 1978.
You can find a bus to the castle at the bus station just north of the old bridge on the Cochem side of the river. We took the bus up to the castle & walked back down. You are going downhill & it was a pleasant walk back to the town.
Mustard Mill
Go visit the mustard factory or Senfmühle. You can taste the many different flavors of mustard that they have. Here you will find that there is more to mustard than French’s yellow mustard and brown mustard. It is worth the visit just to sample a bratwurst with your favorite mustard. They have mustards that they founded dating back to the 1500’s. We didn’t get there in time for a tour but enjoyed our visit there. If I go back to Cochem I will definitely try to go on a tour.
Sassleborn Chair lift
Take a ride on the chairlift to the top of a local look out point, Pinnerkreuz, You will have some fantastic views of Cochem and the Moselle River. Make sure you don’t lose your ticket stub for the ride down. We couldn’t find ours and I thought the guy was going to make us buy another ticket or walk down, but after watching us look for 30 minutes he gave in and let us ride back down. Anyway the views on the ride up and down and at the top were worth the trip up. There is a restaurant at the top but we didn’t eat here so I can’t say how the food is. Even if the food is not good the view will make it worthwhile to eat here. There is a short walk to a promenade for some fantastic views of Cochem Castle, Cochem and the Moselle River.
Wandering the River promenade
Cochem seems to be a hub for local tourists. We spotted several campers and motor homes as we toured this area. Along the promenade there are many restaurants where you can sit and watch the river traffic. Also the main road traffic goes right between these restaurants and the river.
Shopping in Cochem and spending time In Cochem Square
From the Promenade take one of the side streets and leave the river and go into the center of Cochem. There are many side streets and shops winding around the town. There are many wine stores here to purchase the many local wines. There are clothing stores selling German outfits. Here there are also quite a few bakeries, bars, t shirt shops, and I had one of the best bratwursts from a street vendor. There are a few restaurants around the town square and their outdoor tables seemed to be at a premium. We walked by one before lunchtime and there were a few seats available, then came back in the middle of the afternoon and people were waiting on tables, so get here early for some good people watching.
Cochem City Train
Take a sightseeing trip on the Moselle Wein Express. This is a bus that looks like a train. You will find it under the old bridge on the Cochem side of the river. The ride will take about 30 minutes and most of the tour is on the opposite side of the river giving you some great views of Cochem. It is not a see all tour but it will give a you a good lay of the land.
Dining
And this was my favorite thing to do. Everything we had was good. There are so many restaurants there and we only had time for a few. I had some Wiener Schnitzel several times. Germans brew some great beers and I sampled these quite a few times and of course I had bratwurst several times. So, wander around and look at the menus and pick one out. I guarantee you it will be good.
